U.S. Army Col. Craig Collier, commander of the 3rd Squadron, 89th Cavalry, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, receives his spurs during a ceremony awarding members of the 3rd Squadron, 89th Cavalry on Forward Operating Base Loyalty in Baghdad, Iraq, Dec. 12, 2008. The Soldiers receive the spurs to honor their service in combat. Earning spurs is a tradition rooted in knighthood, where the awarding of gilt spurs signified entry into the ranks and fraternity of the mounted warrior.
